How It Was Invented And Some History
Have you ever wondered how this iconic classic cocktail came to be? Let’s take a journey back in time to discover some of its history and the origins of the Margarita.
Legend has it that Margarita was born in Mexico in the 1930s or 1940s. There are several stories surrounding its invention, but one of the most popular tales says that a woman named Margarita Henkel. Margarita, or “Margarita” in Spanish, was a socialite who frequented a bar called Rancho La Gloria in Tijuana, Mexico. It’s said that one day, she requested a special drink from the bartender, who mixed tequila, lime juice, and triple sec, a type of orange liqueur, in equal parts. This blend of drinks was then shaken with ice and served in a salt-rimmed glass, creating the classic Margarita cocktail that we know today.
Another story suggests that the Margarita was created by a bartender named Carlos “Danny” Herrera at his bar in 1938, Rancho La Gloria, around the same time. According to this version of the tale, Herrera invented the cocktail for a customer who was allergic to all hard liquors except tequila. To make the drink more enjoyable for her, he combined tequila, lime juice, and triple sec, and thus, the Margarita was born.
