What Is Blue Hawaiian Cocktail?

Any bartender working in a bar is aware of classic cocktails such as Old-Fashioned, Margarita, Whiskey Sour, etc. and of course, has memorized most of their recipes. A signature cocktail is a unique and special drink created to represent a particular bar, restaurant, event, person, place, or theme. It’s originally designed to reflect specific flavors, ingredients, or concepts, making it distinct and personal. For example, a couple might choose a signature cocktail for their wedding that includes their favorite ingredients or represents a meaningful memory.

Another great example is Trader Vic’s, which is a restaurant and tiki bar chain headquartered in Emeryville, California. These types of cocktails you will find only in Trader Vic’s establishments and nowhere else, as they are their own signature cocktails. A Blue Hawaiian is mainly a variation of the well-loved piña colada. This drink separates the coconut and pineapple flavors to add blue curaçao instead, an orange-flavored liqueur that gives it a striking aquamarine hue. The alcohol content of blue curaçao ranges from 15 to 40 percent. Besides blue curaçao, a Blue Hawaiian includes rich, sweet cream of coconut (often referred to as crème de coconut), which is distinct from coconut cream or coconut milk, as those are typically not sweetened.

The cocktail also features light rum (also known as white rum) and pineapple juice, and is typically garnished with a Maraschino cherry and a pineapple wedge.
